'Exquisite
Segmentation' is a mail art project of multiple artworks coming together to
create a transforming body using the format of an Exquisite Corpse, where a
body is created out of separately drawn head, bodies and feet. Mermaid tails,
cybernetic ribcages, Cyclops heads – all bodies are welcome!!

The parallels between collaborating artists and segmentation are rich with metaphors of individual expression within a relationship of collaboration – many working together to create a mutating collaboration.
During segmentation, each part shares similar goals with its fellow parts while remaining an individual- a collaborative artist project! Scientifically speaking, segments include multiple body parts working in unison, segments of speech forming sentences, and multiple viewpoints of an image working to create a cohesive shape. Artistically speaking, this collaborative project of transforming bodies is a goal of separately working together towards a fantastic collection and exhibition of artwork!
For the beginning stages of 'Exquisite Segmentation', artists are asked to propose an idea for head, bodies, or feet sections of a body - however, head, body and feet are loose terms! Artists are asked to propose their specific sections so we don't end up with a multi-headed body with no feet. However, multiple submissions are welcome!

Some ideas for where this project could go (dependent
on successful funding - selling some of the prints, or fundraising in person,
or fundraising online!)
Starting as a mail-art project, your artwork will be
collected and exhibited before it is mailed back. You can choose to receive
your own work back, or to have it randomly exchanged with another artists. One
possibility is creating a deck of smaller cards from scanned versions of the
cards, so that each artist could have the variations to create their own exquisite
segmentations at home. Another possibility would be creating a limited run of
books for participating artists that again would contain each of the different
pieces that can be flipped back and forth.
Any submissions must be created on 4x6 paper or cardstock that would be
able to survive being mailed as a postcard. Some wear & tear is unavoidable
- as it is with any kind of body!
Please email in
a proposal with your preferred body part (head, body or feet/tail/etc)
along with a short artist statement (3-4 sentences) and a general description
of your idea. I'll email back a package with the details! Using the provided template, your artistic interpretation of the
theme of a body that is able to undergo exquisite segmentation can involve any
art practice. Once your proposal is received, I will email you the required
template and further details!
